Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (cold)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 6 cups sliced apples (Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Cut in cold butter until crumbly.
  3. Gradually add cold water until dough holds together. Chill for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Slice apples and mix with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice; let sit for 15 minutes.
  5. Roll out half the dough and place it in a pie pan. Fill with apple mixture, dot with butter.
  6. Roll out remaining dough as a top crust; seal edges and cut slits for steam.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown. Cool before slicing.
