Description

Experience the warmth and nostalgia of Traditional Hot Cross Buns, a delightful blend of sweet spices and tender dough. These soft, fluffy buns are studded with currants and topped with a glossy cross, making them perfect for Easter celebrations or any cozy gathering. Serve them fresh out of the oven or toasted with butter for a comforting treat that will fill your home with irresistible aromas.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (500g)
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (100g)
  • 1 cup warm milk (240ml)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted (60g)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup currants or raisins (150g)
  • 1 cup icing sugar (120g)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough by combining warm milk and sugar in a large bowl. Stir in yeast and let it sit until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  2. Gradually add flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until combined. Knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  3. Gently fold in currants or raisins and place the dough in a greased bowl. Cover and let it rise in a warm area until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  4. Punch down the dough, divide into 12 equal pieces, shape into balls, and place on a lined baking tray.
  5. Create crosses by mixing flour with water to form a paste and piping it onto each bun.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
