Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp black gel food coloring
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing them and lining the bottoms with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  3. In another bowl, mix the sugar and vegetable oil until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, mixing after each addition. Then add buttermilk, vanilla extract, and black food coloring; mix until smooth.

  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for about 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Allow cakes to cool completely on wire racks before frosting with cream cheese frosting.
