Method
Prepare the Sauce
In a medium saucepan, combine the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, and honey. Whisk together until smooth. This forms the base of your BBQ sauce, balancing sweetness and acidity.
Add the Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using). Whisk again until all ingredients are well combined.
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer. This helps to meld the flavors together.
Once simmering, reduce the heat to low and let it cook for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the sauce to thicken and develop a deeper flavor.
After 30 minutes, taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if necessary. You can add more salt, sugar, or vinegar based on your preference.
Remove the saucepan from heat and let the sauce cool slightly before transferring it to a storage jar.
Store the BBQ sauce in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. The flavors will continue to develop as it sits.
This BBQ sauce is versatile and can be used for grilling, as a marinade, or as a dipping sauce. Feel free to adjust the sweetness or spiciness to suit your taste.
